A sugar craving is simply the body asking for energy.
Nearly everyone craves sugar, the difference is what people do when they experience such a craving. Some of us go right away for the most accessible sweet treat, be it a candy bar, a cake or a cookie. Others who are more health conscious may go for a carrot, or a homemade nuts and seeds energy bar. There are many healthy alternatives that you can use to help alleviate your sugar cravings.
Sugar cravings have many causes, from being bored staring at a computer screen all day, to when you are emotionally eating just to fill an emptiness in your life. One of the main causes of true sugar cravings is when your blood sugar is low, called hypoglycemia. The body always wants to be in balance so it craves sugar so that you eat something to bring it back up, to more normal levels. The type of sugar that you choose to satisfy that craving with, makes all the difference. If you choose something processed or packaged you are bound to end up on a rollercoaster ride of high and low blood sugar levels all day, every day. This also lays the foundation for gaining weight, having tummy fat, becoming obese and eventually leading down the road to Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, High Cholesterol, Chronic Arthritis and Heart Disease (aka The Chronic Degenerative Diseases).
Worldwide, more than 422 million people have Diabetes. Experts say that by 2030 this number will increase to more than 550 million people. The rates are increasing in every country each year, and it is estimated that even with that high number, more than half the people with Diabetes are actually undiagnosed. Which means another 422 million people are currently walking around not knowing that they are Diabetic.
For the past decade, I have seen the whole gamut of complications that arise from sugar addictions and a lifetime of giving into your sugar cravings. From low immunity, lack of energy, a bulging tummy, and weight gain, to Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, High Cholesterol, Heart Attacks, Limb Amputations, Strokes... and the list goes on.
This has been heartbreaking for me to see when I know that reducing processed sugar and eating a healthy balanced diet can prevent all of these conditions and their complications.
